Wow, well Toxic succeeded in keeping up the good pace Touch set up, and started with a bang. But does it top the first book? In a way yes it does. It has a more dramatic tone mainly because the person who is in some serious shit is our precious narrator, Dez. She lost her immunity to Kale, had been poisoned, Supremacy is coming and the newcomer Six, Jade is a total bitch.
The book has its ups and downs but when I say ups, I mean mind-blowingly exciting scenes, hilarious and sweet moments. This crew couldn't have been better. I love them. There's always someone to hate, like "just give me 5 minutes with them" kind of hate, someone to love, to root for and who make you laugh out loud and some creeps too. And of course there's Dez to worry about.
That poison is pretty sick! I just wish it had worked a bit faster. And this is where comes the downside. I kept waiting the poison to really kick in and make me go from pitying Dez to biting my nails out of fear for her. That happened only at very end of the book, unfortunately. The supremacy thing makes me way more worried, so can't wait to know how that will go down. Mr. Cross didn't disappoint me. He has NO heart! None, zero, nada. We got some new characters -from both sides- and I loved them all except Jade (really, you CANNOT like her, it's impossible!). And another good thing.. Kale finally started to grow on me. I loved his badass territorial attitude along with his innocence, and sweetness.
I loved the investigating storyline. There's a spy amongst them, and they have to find out who asap. Of course, Dez knows it's Jade, but she has to get some serious proof, doesn't matter if her palm's itching to kill that bitch. Anyway the twist about a character was really a twist. Didn't expect that at all. Nicely done.
Overall: It was a fun read. Has its flaws, but you just can't not like this story and the characters and will want the next book right away after this heartbreaking ending.
When a Six saved Kale's life the night of Sumrun, she warned there would be consequences. A trade-off. Something taken for the life they gained. But Dez never imagined she'd lose the one thing she'd give anything to keep... And as if it's not enough Dez finds her immunity to Kale fading, the Six brought in to help Kale learn to control his killer touch starts drooling on him the moment they meet. Worse than that? Jade can touch Kale. But bimbo Barbie is the least of Dez's problems.
After Dez and Kale got away at Sumrun, her father lost not only his most powerful weapon but an important piece of the Supremacy project. Forced by Denazen to remedy the situation, he poisons Dez and offers her a choice--surrender to Denazen for the cure...or die. Determined to find a solution that doesn't involve being bagged and tagged--or losing someone she loves--Dez keeps the poison a secret. But when a rash of Denazen attacks hit a little too close to home, Dez is convinced there's a traitor among them. Jade.
Sacrifices, broken promises, and secrets. Dez will have to lay it all on the line if there's any hope of proving Jade's guilt before they all end up Residents of Denazen. Or worse, dead...
