Review ~ Reaver by Larissa Ione

"We’re the most fucked-up, star-crossed lovers in history.
So let’s not play nice."

WARRIOR OF HEAVEN

Reaver is an angel with a past, a record, and a less-than-heavenly attitude. Powerful enough to fight alongside the fiercest battle angels-and crazy enough to risk his wings on a one-way mission to hell-he's agreed to go where no angel has ever gone before . . . to steal the most seductive and dangerous prize of Satan himself.

ANGEL OF HELL

Harvester is one of the Fallen, a once-heroic angel who sacrificed her wings to work as an undercover agent in hell. But now her cover has been blown, and she's doomed to an eternity of agonizing torture. Even if Reaver can snatch her away from Satan's lair, even if they can fight their way out of the underworld's darkest depths, there is one thing Harvester can never escape-her newfound thirst for an angel's blood . . .

Title: Reaver

Read an Excerpt

After the big disappointment what Rogue Rider was for me, I was expecting a huge comeback with Reaver. He had that kind of storyline that could easily live up - with one book - to the overall story of the series. Up to this point Lethal Rider was my absolute favorite because of the characters, even though Immortal Rider was the best when it comes to twists and adventure. Reaver HAS the whole package.

I love Harvester because she's sassy, smart, kick-ass but also vulnerable, but still can be a bitch and a hero at the same time. I love these kind of characters who are not just plain white or black, good or evil. Yes I hated her in the first two books, like everyone else did, but  she was also entertaining so I kinda liked her before, but boy. I just simply adore her now.

As for Reaver... he's brilliant. It's amazing how loosing his memory and wings changed him. That was probably the best thing that could have happened to him. The old Reaver, the one who slept with Lillith was a jerk. But this new one, he's a true hero. He's selfish, kind and a total badass! And noone can resist his sarcastic humor.

So why is this book so awesome? First, because It has kind of a cat-mouse game vibe to it. The dynamics between Reaver and Harvester is fascinating. The energy bouncing around like a pin ball when these two converse, the way they challenge and still support each other is truly exceptional. Second, it's eventful. There's always something happening. For half of the book we're in Hell watching Harvester and Reaver fight their way to out of there. Plus thanks to the POV changes, sometimes we get a peek into others' heads, such as Satan or Revenant (the new evil watcher), or the Angels (those sons of bitches!). But the journey doesn't end when our two lovebirds are out of Satan's territory. Hell no. There are a bunch of complications and betrayals they have to face with before they can get their happy ending. If they ever get it. And the third reason.... the twists!! Holy missing relatives! They blew my expectations out of the water!

There are so many emotions (love, hate, blind rage, sympathy, lust, surprise, excitement, etc) in this book and it brings out so many of the reader's it's unbelievable.
Larissa delivered on all accounts…

Can't wait for Azagoth and more Revenant - I hate when authors make me love character I hated before, and then make me wait, ugh!!

Favorite character(s): Reaver, Harvester, Revenant, Sem brothers, Tavin (hope he gets a book too!!)
Favorite scene(s): Oh, this is HARD! My favorite scene is sad as hell, but beautifully wrote, without being too spoilery, it's when Harvester gets an upgrade.
Favorite quote(s):

“Fine,” he said. “You’re right. We’re not normal. We’re the most fucked-up, star-crossed lovers in history. So let’s not play nice.”
"She, more than any angel in history, had shaped the future of all the realms.
Harvester was a fallen angel. And a fallen hero."
Wraith beamed. “So,” he said, “you really think having archangels string you up by your halo is worth saving this Harvester chick?”
(...)“She saved the world.”
Wraith shrugged. “So did I, but I don’t see you offering up your holy ass to save me.”
“Are you suffering unspeakable horrors at the hands of Satan?”
“No,” Wraith said, “but sometimes I have to eat hospital cafeteria food.”
Reaver sighed. Wraith was a hundred-year-old child.

If music nourishes the soul…

Loved by millions, but shunned by blood, Heath “Fang” Fangor has led his band, Hot Wired, to the top while others have fallen by the wayside. He devoted his life to music, and from that devotion harvested a new family—his band mates and fans.

A man can desire nothing else…or can he?

Living in the shadow of her brother’s fame sucks! Sam Collins is desperate to have what she wants—a simple and uncomplicated life. She’s no stranger to scandals and how they work. Now that she’s inadvertently dragged Fang into the center of her latest gossip, could the scandal she created in her quest for freedom have gone too far?

Amid stardom the heart stages a new melody…

Fang has more fame and fortune than he will ever need, but none of that matters if he can’t have the woman of his dreams. Years have been wasted waiting for the right moment to approach the woman his heart desires above all others. There’s just one major problem...she’s his best friend’s sister. To have her, he will have to risk it all.

That might be responsible for Rockin the Heart!

Review ~ Struck by Jennifer Bosworth

“When you've been struck by lightning as many times as I have, you start to expect the worst pretty much all the time.”

Mia Price is a lightning addict. She’s survived countless strikes, but her craving to connect to the energy in storms endangers her life and the lives of those around her.Los Angeles, where lightning rarely strikes, is one of the few places Mia feels safe from her addiction. But when an earthquake devastates the city, her haven is transformed into a minefield of chaos and danger. The beaches become massive tent cities. Downtown is a crumbling wasteland, where a traveling party moves to a different empty building each night, the revelers drawn to the destruction by a force they cannot deny. Two warring cults rise to power, and both see Mia as the key to their opposing doomsday prophecies. They believe she has a connection to the freak electrical storm that caused the quake, and to the far more devastating storm that is yet to come.

Mia wants to trust the enigmatic and alluring Jeremy when he promises to protect her, but she fears he isn’t who he claims to be. In the end, the passion and power that brought them together could be their downfall. When the final disaster strikes, Mia must risk unleashing the full horror of her strength to save the people she loves, or lose everything.

Title: Struck
Author: Jennifer Bosworth
Series: Struck #1
Length: Hardcover,  373 pages
Publisher:  Farrar, Straus and Giroux BYR
Original Publication Date: May 8th 2012

When I first came across Struck, I thought its story-line was quite fresh and interesting in this genre and I knew I will read it.. someday. Then later I ran into the book trailer and my jaw dropped. It is so awesome I got excited all over again even though there was nothing new that the blurb didn't tell me earlier. It was just so intense and brilliantly made. A few months later I finally got to read the book too.

Since it's a YA book, I was actually terrified. What if the main character is whiny, stupid, or just too girly for my taste? What if the story is full of cliches? What if the romance will be a total waste of time? Well, they say that the proof of the pudding is in the eating, so here we go.

It's written in first person POV, so I needed to like the main character to enjoy the book. While Mia isn't one of those tough, bad-ass girls like Rose (Vampire Academy), Katniss (Hunger Games), Jesse (Darker Days), etc, who I adore, she isn't a selfless, delicate flower either. I really liked her sarcasm and she does says anyone to f*** off and doesn't let anyone to control her. Most days anyway.

And there's the story which has everything. Some elements of paranormal, religion, conspiracy, science. All this stuff in a post-apocalyptic city in ruins. With its "slow and steady wins the race" concept, 'Struck'  rivets the readers to their seats, because  they certainly will keep guessing for a good long time, before the reasons of why either cults wants Mia are revealed. Despite the fact that I enjoyed groping in dark and coming up with all kinds of conspiracy theories while trying to figure out who are the good guys - IF there's any -, speculating about the main villain, the Prophet's abilities, how can he do all the shits he does, what's his true goal, etc... still there was a bit too much story build-up... not enough action and no smashing catharsis for me. I also expected to see more crashing and smashing between the two warring cults, but they didn't really do anything to each other, I kept waiting for them to bring a good Raiden fight or something like that, but sadly, I didn't get it. However, I confess valiantly there were some twists that surprised me at the end. The biggest was the true identity of Mia's love interest, Jeremy. I would have loved if his character takes a full 180 degree turn and becomes the exact opposite of what he was, but I knew that's not going to happen. and of course I was right. Maaaan what a waste of an ultimate twist! Okay, maybe it's because I didn't really liked his character, but whatever. It could have been a-w-e-s-o-m-e. Of all the side characters, I have to mention one person particularly. Katrina, a member of the cult called "Seekers". Boy, this girl was on fire! Whenever and wherever she showed up nothing remained peacefully. She was tough and funny. Can't we make her the protagonist??

The love story fortunately, however, wasn't the center of the story. Why fortunately? Because, while as a separate side character I sort of liked Jeremy, the relationship between Mia and him was really missing the fire that she always felt around him. I really did not feel the chemistry between them, I think it would have been better to let them be just friends or allies would have been more interesting than the unnecessary love story.

The 'Struck', despite its slower tempo, completely captured my attention and although I probably will not read the book over and over again because the charm in it is that it keeps the reader in the dark, and slowly reveals the big secrets. But for a one-time, or once/year entertaining read it's perfect. Not much chance that the reader's gonna throw it at the wall :). There are some questions left about the "Seeker" cult members, and maybe we will actually get answers to those if the sequel comes out in 2016, but there was no cliffhanger making 'Struck' a great standalone novel.

Favorite character(s): Katrina, Mia
Favorite scene(s): Basically every scene with the Seekers. They were fun.
Favorite quote(s):

A piece of advice: if you want to remain in control of a doomsday cult, don't give a date for the end of the world unless you're really, really sure it's going to happen. Being wrong tends to undermine your authority.

Review: Guardian Demon by Meljean Brook

In this thrilling conclusion to the Guardian series, New York Times bestselling author Meljean Brook delivers another stunning page-turner, in which the fate of humanity depends upon a tortured warrior winning the trust—and heart—of the woman he wounded…

Title: Guardian Demon
Series: The Guardians #8
Author: Meljean Brook
Genre: Urban Fantasy / Paranormal Romance
Publisher: Berkley
Date of publication: August 6, 2013
Goodreads || Amazon

After a terrifying encounter in Hell destroys her trust in Michael, the Guardian’s powerful leader, former detective Andromeda Taylor is ready to call it quits as one of the angelic warriors and resume her human life again. But when demonic forces threaten her closest friends and she uncovers a terrifying plot devised by Lucifer, Taylor is thrown straight into Michael’s path again…

To defeat Lucifer, Michael needs every Guardian by his side—and he needs Taylor more than any other. The detective is the key to keeping his own demonic side at bay, and Michael will do anything to protect her and keep her close. And when Taylor manifests a deadly power, her Gift might tip the scales in the endless war between Heaven and Hell…or it might destroy them both with a single touch.

I'm a huge fan of Meljean's 'Guardian' series, so Guardian Demon was a bittersweet experience for me, and I think for every fan out there, since it's the last of the series.  It's fair to say that We have waited so long for this book, for Michael's and Taylor's story it's not even funny. But boy, it did worth it!

Although, it was a bit slow and  monotonous here and there and that took away a little from the overall epicness of the finale, hence my four stars rating. I am a little disappointed, because I didn't get the feeling of a final book, when I'm gripping the edge of my seat, (almost)crying, extremely afraid or excited to turn the pages, even though there was way more going on than in any of the previous books. There were a lot of potential areas for conflicts that Meljean should have used thus creating a way more intense story. It was amazing, but it could have been the ultimate epicness.

However, despite all of the above, Meljean just cannot write a bad book. Maybe it's not the best - for me personally -, maybe it has flaws, but still, 'Guardian Demon' is just so damn good! It delivers almost everything I expect from a series finale: intense, all consuming love story, incredible twists, the whole crew - Guardians, humans, vampires, halflings, everyone you love - teaming up against the ultimate enemy and brings us an epic all-or-nothing showdown. 'Guardian Demon' started with a bang and ended with a blast.

I just have to mention that how insanely good Meljean is in character writing. Of course, she's a fantastic writer overall, but her characters are just a class all by themselves! When Michael gives a speach, you can't help but hear his voice, be moved by it. It's like if his psychic song would have reached you too. And his characterization (without giving away anything), the fact that he's indeed a big hero, but not heroic. His nature is not at all about love and goodness. He's not a perfect good guy everyone thinks he is. Rather it's all his personality, his beliefs are that make everyone easily think like that. He's one of the most unique heroes I've ever met. And every other character have their own personality, agendas and beliefs. It's just amazing, how multidimensional they are. And I think the greatest thing in the series, explained beautifully especially in this book is how it sees things like free will, or faith, or whether there is a reason behind bad or good things happening. I loved these parts. Also kudos to Meljean for not going all "deus ex machina" on us. No easy, cheap & cliche solution that solves everything in a millisecond.

Anyway, it's not my favorite book in the series but still, I loved it, finished it in no time, and even though all good things must come to an end, I am sad to see this series end. It deserves a much bigger fan base, so I don't accept any excuse for not wanting to read it, such as "oh it's a series, I don't want to wait for the next book...", because it is finished! And it is absolutely phenomenal! So go ahead, buy it, read it, you're gonna love it!

Favorite character(s): Michael, Lillith, Khavi, Jake
Favorite scene(s): Starting scene, the "plotting the world saver plan" scene and the final battle.
Favorite quote(s):
Michael moved to the bottom of the temple stairs, where she sat on the third step. When he sank to his heels, his eyes were on level with hers, his expression grave. “Two and a half years is no time, it’s true. Unless the woman you need to apologize to more than any other lies in a bed. And you visit her almost every hour, hoping that she will wake, yet her mind remains silenced because of what you've done. Then two and a half years can be an eternity.”

PS.: I just read that there's gonna be a novella and a possible book for Khavi in the future and I'm so freaking happy right now!!

He grew up with a secret that cost him everything- His birthright, his family and his military career. In all his life, he’s only had one love and he has sacrificed his own happiness to see his best friend reunited with the woman he loves. But now that his good deed is done, he feels lost and adrift. Even though they do their best to include him in their new family, he’s once again on the outside looking in.

Nor can he believe her when she describes a loyalty between friends the likes of which he’s never seen.

Having spent his life as a living study of doomed relationships, Maris is well aware of the courtship and fiasco that invariably follows. Still, there is something about Ture he can’t resist. Something that won’t let him walk away when he knows he should.

But when old enemies return to threaten them both, they either have to stand together or die alone.

Overall: I give it “only” 4.5 stars, because despite how good it was, it’s still just a short story and that is exactly what we got. Nothing special other than it’s loveable. And sometimes there’s repetition of certain “information” and phrases, which throws me off a little in general. So all in all, I’m happy Sherri was brave enough to write this and I got to read it. I definitely recommend reading C&S.

Have you ever gone just a little too far?
Lexie Banks has.

Yep. She just had mind-blowing sex with her stepbrother. In her defense, she was on the rebound, and it’s more of a my-dad-happened-to-marry-a-woman-with-a-super-hot-son situation. But still, he’s been her best friend and confidant for better part of the last few years…and is so off limits. It’s a good thing she’s leaving in two days for a year abroad in Rome. But even thousands of miles away, Lexie can’t seem to escape trouble. Raised Catholic, she goes to Confession in hopes of alleviating some of her guilt…and maybe not burning in hell.

Instead, she stumbles out of the confessional right into Alessandro Moretti, a young and very easy on the eyes deacon…only eight months away from becoming a priest. As Lexie and Alessandro grow closer, and when Alessandro’s signals start changing despite his vow of celibacy, she doesn’t know what to think. She’s torn between falling in love with the man she shouldn’t want and the man she can’t have. And she isn’t sure how she can live with herself either way.

"More than a ridiculously sexy, HOT read, Desrochers takes you on a wild ride of self-discovery and bittersweet romance." —Jennifer L. Armentrout (J. Lynn), New York Times bestselling author of Wait for You

Testing Fate Blog Tour: Interview with a vampire!

Hello everyone, and welcome to the Testing Fate Blog Tour

Along the tour, there will be multiple stops with Interviews, character interviews, excerpts, reviews, and, of course, BIG GIVEAWAYS!!

Today is our stop for the Testing Fate blog tour and We have the pleasure of interviewing Vlad, the vampire! No.. not that one. But do not worry, this one is more...fun!

Andie: Hey Vlad! (I always wanted to interview a vampire called Vlad ^^) Thanks so much for agreeing to give us some inside info into your life! You’re a side character, but whenever you show up you always crack me up. You love to live, don’t you?
Vlad: It’s my pleasure to be here, Andie *grins, flashing a little fang just for you* The fact you’ve invited me here instead of my fellow story characters, says who the REAL star is, right? Sure, I could be sexy or swoony like Mason and Devlin, but it’s all about having a sense of humor. Anyone can have muscles *rolls eyes*

Andie: Describe yourself to someone who has never met you.
Vlad: I’m a vampire on a mission to STAND OUT and go down in history as one of the greats! Unfortunately, I haven’t quite figured out who I want to be now I’m immortal. *lets out a sigh and rakes fingers through my currently blond hair* I thought naming myself after Dracula would earn me popularity, but so far it hasn’t worked. Same with dressing like Edward Cullen. Someone told me sparkles were the new “in” with the ladies, but yeah. *shakes head* Having an identity crisis sucks. Do you have any suggestions? I saw someone on Facebook the other night mention someone called Spike. He sounds interesting.

Andie: Why did you decide to become a vampire? I know your brother didn't want you to become one.
Vlad: I wanted something more than the rut I was stuck in, and figured it would give my life more meaning. *shrugs shoulders* So far it’s the same—no respect, no girlfriend, and my apartment is lousy. I keep asking Devlin to hook me up, but he thinks I’m not ready. Personally, I think he’s just jealous of my style and flair.

Andie: Tell us something about yourself that we don’t learn in the books.
Vlad: I’m a romantic at heart. Underneath all the sophistication and sex appeal, is a vampire who wants a special someone to snuggle with. *leans forward, laying on the charm* Interested in a little one-on-one time with the Vladster, beautiful? *wiggles eyebrows*

Andie: You like to make an impression with your…uhm… extreme looks. When you walk into a room, what do you notice first? Second?
Vlad: I always notice what the person’s wearing. Like today, I wore my best threads just for you. *stands up and turns around slowly* Black leather pants, black t-shirt, and studded boots. Impressive, huh? Clothes say a lot about a person. Same with their smile. *flashes you another one* I like surrounding myself with positive people like me.

Andie: What is your most embarrassing moment?
Vlad: Pass. I don’t know if Devlin’s going to read this and the LAST thing I want is to give him more ammunition. My uncle gives me a hard enough time as it is. Let’s just say it involved a chicken, tequila laced blood, and a mariachi band. Enough said.

Andie: What is one strong memory that has stuck with you from childhood? Why is it so powerful and lasting?
Vlad:  I remember reading Dracula in school, and thinking how cool it’d be to have that kind of power and immortality. I was a nobody back then, bullied by the popular kids, and something told me being supernatural would make me someone … make me better. It was powerful enough that I’m now a vampire. Give me time, and it’ll be ME everyone talks about. It’s already begun *winks*

Andie: How’s your relationship with Darcy and her pack?
Vlad: It’s pretty good. Darcy’s a real sweetheart, and we’ve had some great conversations. Secretly, I think I’m one of her favorites. She listens to my advice, and appreciates my sense of humor. Her mate, Mason … well, I think he just tolerates me. That’s okay, I’ve got plenty of time to win him over.

Andie: I know you don’t want to spend eternity alone, and you’re trying to find a girl. So, here’s your chance, there are lots of girls in our audience. So what would you write in a Date ad? Just be yourself.
Vlad:  How about one of my head shots with the words: Available to rock your world and introduce you to the seductive dark side of life. Immortality optional. Biting a MUST.

Andie: What is next? What is going on with you at the moment? Will we get more of you in Testing Fate? I hope so!!
Vlad: I’m just chillin’, trying to find the right career path for me. Eternity’s a long time when you have no purpose. *stretches legs out* You don’t see me in Testing Fate … I know, annoyed me, too. For some reason the author thought it should be all about Darcy and Mason *shakes head, frustrated* I had to sit her down and explain that my fans want more of me, not just the hunky beefcakes. We’ll see what happens in Forever Changed. Belinda promised me some major page time. I don’t know, she can be pretty shifty sometimes, though. I can never tell if she’s serious or teasing me.

Andie: Is there anything else that you'd like to add before we end?
Vlad: Yes, what time do I pick you up this Friday? *leans in to grab your hand, and slips off the chair* Damn, sorry. These leather pants take some getting used to. What was I saying? *tries to hide embarrassment* Ahhh, yes … a date. What do you say?

Andie: Thank you so much for stopping by and answering ALL of my questions! It was fun. I hope we will meet again…soon ;)
Vlad: Most definitely. Thank you for asking me. *kisses back of hand* You’ve been sweet.

I hope you’ve all enjoyed this insight into Vlad's life. I know I did.

ARC Review - Beautiful Danger by Michele Hauf

Title: Beautiful Danger
Author: Michele Hauf
Series: In the Company of Vampires #1
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Date of publication: July 1st 2013 by Harlequin
Could Her Sworn Enemy Lead Her Out of Darkness?
As a member of an ancient order of hunters, Lark has found that eliminating dangerous vampires is about more than duty. It's personal—a kill for every day her husband was held captive before his death. Staking her prey isn't a challenge until she confronts Domingos LaRoque. Mad with vengeance and the blood of a powerful phoenix, Domingos tests her skills…and seduces her soul.

Once a talented musician, Domingos can't escape the constant music in his head …or his need to destroy the werewolf pack that tortured him. Though trusting the hunter ordered to kill him could be his gravest mistake, the dark desires between them can't be refused. Yet as he and Lark become allies to defeat a mutual threat, loving the enemy may be the ultimate sacrifice.

*Note: I received this as a free eARC through Netgalley*

Oh, the cover is awesome! Great concept, finally it's not the mainstream, one woman, one man posing in some kind of sexy way (I don't have real probelem with those, other than they're extremely boring). It screams of mystery, danger and a strong lead character. So the outside truly does reflect the inside, although at first I thought (and hoped) it was going to be some kind of light sci-fi.

They say the forbidden fruit tastes the sweetest, and I think this is absolutely true. People want what they can’t have, it’s in our nature. I think a forbidden romance is way more interesting, but I also prefer a conflict between the two characters in these cases. I love when they're starting out as enemies, I think it makes it more interesting, exciting and entertaining. But obviously, everything depends on the the writing and the story.

I loved this story. It's kind of unique in a way that the hero is literally going crazy and he is truly dangerous, and as a reader I too felt unsure what he would do next. On the other hand it's fascianating and also sad. It took some time for me to fall in love with Domingos (I still don't like his name, though), but he got under my skin too. He's such a riveting character, even though the character development is not the strongest aspect of this book. Lark also is a great character; kick-ass, strong, funny. However her constant guilt drove me nuts. I get it, but bringing it up in every situation wasn't helping her and it definitely won't help the readers get to like her story. It's a good impulsion in her job, but it got out of hands. And frankly, I didn't see why she would mourn that relationship for years with such force... it was an awful relationship!

Anyway, I liked the first half of the book more, because the cat and mouse game between these two was entertaining without getting boring, and there was something else going on in the backround between the Order and the werewolves, so it was quite interesting. But from the moment Lark gave into the temptation, everything was about sex *sigh*. I know it's a romance driven story, but those can be balanced too, and I don't feel this was. In the second half, the characters were getting annoyingly restless. "Oh there's probably a price on both of our heads? Who cares, let's just running around and have sex and then just split up, so they can easily kill both of us, why not?! It'll be fun!" Whatever, at least something truly exciting happened again. Now, don't get me wrong, I loved their romance, and it was well built-up, I just didn't like the balance of the lustful sex scenes (whis sometimes felt pretty forced) and their actual connecting along with some other events. Events like what the hell is going on between the hunters and the werewolves??? Probably it's gonna be explained in the next books in the series, but right now it's just a big fecking mess!

Some other things that got on my nerves were, for example the leader of the pack is called principal...what.the.hell. Would it hurt to write alpha or there's some sort of other meaning to this, if so then what is it because this irritated me as f*ck. Also, I'm usually not a member of the grammar police, but sometimes complete words were missing and the author used "about" instead of "around" many times in situations that aren't right...

Overall I really enjoyed the story, and the uniqueness of the characters and the romance between them. I don't regret that I read it, it was a fast and entertaining read despite of my issues with it.
