Early Review ~ No Dogs Allowed by Nicole Hicks

Title: No Dogs Allowed
Author: Nicole Hicks
Series: A 1Night Stand Story
Publisher: Decadent Publishing
Kenya is a cat on a mission. Go to her job interview in fabulous Las Vegas and manage to wrangle in a vacation. Shouldn’t be too hard to do in Sin City. She hadn’t counted on a hotel full of dogs giving her sneezing fits anytime she leaves her room. How can she get in relaxation, or even meet a guy when every one she encounters brings on an allergy attack?

Desperate and blotchy, she decides to try 1Night Stand. Maybe Madame Eve can set her up with a man who will knock her socks off before she knocks him off his feet? Or at least one she can date without taking a Benadryl. Kenya finds herself blown away, in a different way, by handsome, charming, explosively sexy Raphael. But they are worse than apples and oranges—they are cat and dog, a huge problem any day of the week, even if she wasn’t allergic to his type!

READ AN EXCERPT!

First of all let me give you an advice. If you are not familiar with 1Night Stand Stories, then go and check out this page before you read this book.

I wasn't familiar with it either and because of that the book was a bit rush and confusing, but after I read what 1Night Stand really is it cleared everything.

NDA is a quick read and a real page-turner. Thanks to our guide, Kenya, who is a Brazilian Shorthair cat with excellent sense of humor and an allergy to Dogs. She is definitely a likeable character. Oh and I LOVE how the author put the title into the story, it was really funny. And the fact, that the shifters are basically domestic dogs and cats is a real refreshing. I'm kind of totally over the alpha-animal-especially-wolves-and-tigers kind of shifter stories.

Raphael is Kenya's one night date... at least she thought that before they've met. He was an interesting character in my opinion, because he started as a good-looking gentleman, then he's like a real womanizer with wicked thoughts, but when someone mentions something about his breed, and he has to show Kenya what is he exactly he immediately turns into a shy, scared puppy. What I completely understand, because yeah.. well you'll see why. HOWEVER, after he saw that Kenya accepts him as the way he is, he turns back into that naughty, wicked womanizer... YUMMY!! And I really liked this. It shows how a man could be vulnerable and though at the same time without being a pussy...

And here comes, why I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5...
The focus clearly isn't on any background story, it's on that Kenya wants a vacation and a one night with pure pleasure but eventually gets something else. Something precious and unexpected. BUT while the "R" rated scenes were really sultry, somehow I didn't get that mind blowing feeling that could compensate the lack of background story. And the beginning was a little bit confusing, like "kitties, dogs, so  they're shifters then or these are just some kind of code names and they're simply want to irritate each other??" without the blurb. However, I really enjoyed this book and worth the reading!

Early Review ~ Covet by Felicity Heaton

Title: Covet
Author: Felicity Heaton
Series: Vampire Erotic Theatre Romance #1
Length: 103 pages
Release Date: Jan 14th 2012
They’ve burned for each other for two years, the forbidden attraction between them growing each night. Now resisting the sinful desires of their hearts is becoming impossible.

Javier knows better than to succumb to his hunger for Lilah. The mortal female belongs to a powerful aristocrat patron of Vampirerotique, the theatre he runs with three other vampires. A single touch is all it would take to break the sacred law of his kind, sentencing himself to death, but his passion for her has become too fierce to ignore and he will risk everything to make Lilah his.

Lilah has fought her desire for Javier since arriving at his theatre as a servant but each glance he has stolen, his eyes promising pleasure that will satisfy her longing for him, has chipped away at her defences and she can no longer deny her need and her forbidden feelings for the powerful vampire male.

When they find themselves alone in a private box during one of the erotic performances, will they surrender to their passion and live out their wildest fantasies in a night of wicked pleasure or will the threat of Lilah’s master keep them apart forever?

My thougths:
ARC review

There is one rule Javier never intended to break... until now!
Never, ever touch a human owned by another vampire. Don't feed from them, don't give in to the desire for them! Yeah, right! It's easy to tell, but when you are a vampire with a few hundred years behind you and running a Theatre where the preferred sin amongst audience is lust and the Repertoire mostly contains wild, rough sex, blood and death, it's not surprising when you're finally find someone you desperately crave for, and not even the fact, that if you stop fighting with the desire you will sign your own death sentence, will stop you from give in the need and break the sacred law. Javier fought against his hunger for Lilah. The human woman who was sent by her old, powerful vampire owner to work at the Theatre two years ago. Lilah wants him too. They can't resist the temptation to be together anymore regardless of the painful, deadly consequences.

After a month spent away from her, Javier's main excuse to meet Lilah is, that she punched one of the performers and he has to investigate why did she do that. Even though I didn't know why she did that yet, I liked her immediately for this.

Although Lilah's character isn't a "superhero" and a i-beat-the-sh!te-out-of-you chick, she stands up for herself and for others. I liked that after her first sultry affair with Javier, she took the initiative and went after him to make it clear what's going on between them.

Speaking of that affair... MAN!! You'll need a cold shower.. ok, make it two! I swear that's one of the hottest situations I've ever read!! And then I didn't even mentioned the other sweaty bedroom scenes...

As for Javier... Actually I couldn't connect with his character. We learned about his family, his age, but a very old vampire has life experiences, or loss in his life, or something else I think, what he has been doing for hundreds of years? I would have loved to read about his life more. But he's brave and he's a realistic character (as much as a vampire could be, but who knows, right?? ) and I'd have the same reaction as Lilah's when he speaks naughty!! *blushes*

As we can expect from a novella, we didn't get to see the side characters often, but I have to mention Snow! Who runs Vampirerotique - the Theatre - with his older brother, Antoine and Javier and Javier's friend, Callum. He's an aristocrat, pureblood vampire. White hair, icy eyes, dangerous, and he is often in a killer mood... literally! And he is over two thousand years old. My type of guy... I hope he will be the main character in one of the books in the series.

I enjoyed the fight scene with Lilah's owner! It's hard to please me with action scenes, because I'm an adrenaline junkie, and I hardly can get enough of those scenes, but this was well built up.

My other problem (which is the last one) that the main characters fell in love with each other too quickly. Yes I know! Two years isn't quick, and we know, that Javier had taken care of Lilah in those years, but how? How many times they talked? How much did they know about each other? Not so much as it seemed... I would love to know what did he do for her over the past years that made her fallen in love with him so fast.

OVERALL: If you're looking for a HOT, passionate romance story mixed with a bit paranormal, a quick read with a unique plot, I recommend you to read this book! I highly recommend this book on a cold night to warm you up! I really enjoyed it and looking forward to read CRAVE, the next book in the Vampire Erotic Theatre series.

Review ~ Ascension by Felicity Heaton

genre: paranormal / urban fantasy romance book
length: 91000 words / novel
rating: sultry
released: April 2011
A witch on the verge of achieving phenomenal power, Lealandra must turn to her half-breed demon ex-lover Taig for protection from the dark force that is after her and also from her own magic.

With her Counter-Balance dead and her coven against her, Taig’s blood and power is the only thing that can help her control her magic and survive the ascension and gain the strength to defeat her enemy.

Old feelings come flooding back as Taig allows her into his world and Lealandra finds herself fighting not only for survival but to win his broken heart again and heal the pain in their past. Can he forgive her for walking out on him all those years ago and will he ever believe her when she tells him that he’s not a monster but the man that she loves?

I don’t know why most of the author’s readers never mention this book. I keep seeing her Angel and Vampires books, but not this one. But I can tell, that Ascension is as good as her other books.

Okay, maybe I am a little biased against this, because my favorite para creatures are the demons for a while now. Although this book is about witches rather than demons, actually, our Heroine; Lealandra, is a powerful witch who begins to lose control over her own magic, as her Ascension is coming. Witches need their own Counter-Balance. Someone who can temper their magic. Here is the problem. She lost hers. Moreover, someone wants her dead. Lealandra leaves her coven to find her ex-lover and ask for help. The demon hunter, Taig who is also a half-demon. He let her go six years ago; he definitely will not make that mistake again, now that she is back. In a world, where usually witches and demons don’t get involved with the other race’s problem, now for some reason, the demons hunting her, and when theoretically her coven would be the best help for her, it seems, the only person who Lealandra can trust is her half-demon ex. Her Ascension mark clearly shows that Taig has a big role in her ascension. The question is what is his role and is he powerful enough to save Lealandra? It’s a race against time, a war against witches, demons and her own magic.

Overall: This action packed, magical romance story won’t give you rest. As most of Felicity’s books, Ascension begins in medias res. With a *cough* HOT *cough* scene between Taig and Lealandra. I did not have a tiny problem with this book! Nothing… Nada! There was action, romance, mystery, drama, loveable characters, funny quotes, good story, and two strong lead characters. My only question is what really happened with Taig’s parents???

I must post a few quotes from/about Taig, because I just love him and these were memorable for me…

“I guess that’s why you’re here. Loverboy just doesn’t cut it when it comes to handling demons. That pair of weaklings would have him inside out and back to front before he could lift a finger to cast whatever impotent half-assed spell he could muster.”
“If I’d decided not to let him take you, he wouldn’t have. He would’ve died a lot sooner.”
“There were at least twenty storeys on the building and it was wide. He figured it housed around seven hundred witches. That was six hundred and ninety nine more than he was comfortable with.”

And there’s a few more, but I let you find them.
I highly recommend this book!
